FAQ
Real answers from real installs.
Every answer here comes from the Vent My Attic install team: the roofers, coordinators, and engineers who put solar attic fans on real homes, every week, all over the country. 35 questions grouped by topic.
Pricing And Savings
How much does a solar attic fan cost?
One bundled price covers the 30W fan, flashing, hardware, and a licensed authorized installer doing the install. We quote the number on the product page based on your ZIP.
Read the long answer →How much will I save on my energy bill?
Hot-climate homeowners usually see a 15 to 25 percent drop in summer cooling cost. On a $280 August bill that is $42 to $70 back each month.
Read the long answer →How long until it pays for itself?
Most Hot-climate homeowners hit payback in 3 to 6 cooling seasons through lower AC use and longer roof life.
Are there tax credits or rebates for solar attic fans?
Some states and utilities offer rebates, and a federal residential solar credit may apply to the panel portion. We do not include credits in the quote because rules change.
What financing options do you offer?
You can pay in full at checkout or split the cost into monthly payments through our financing partner. No prepayment penalty.
Installation
How long does installation take?
Professional install in a single visit. One fan, one penetration, full flashing and seal.
Read the long answer →Can I install a solar attic fan myself?
Technically yes, but you give up the workmanship warranty, the roof penetration warranty, and any roof manufacturer coverage. We do not sell a DIY kit.
Read the long answer →Will a solar attic fan damage my roof?
No. The flashing kit is the same heavy gauge a roofer uses for a plumbing vent stack. The seal is rated to outlast the shingles around it.
Read the long answer →What is the best roof placement for a solar attic fan?
The high back slope, on the south or west face if your back of house points that way. The fan needs sun and wants to be as high in the attic as possible.
Read the long answer →Who actually shows up to install the fan?
A licensed authorized installer from our installer network. Not a handyman, not a one-day-training door knocker, not a general contractor.
What if my attic does not have enough soffit venting?
The roofer flags it during install and quotes the fix separately so you can decide. We do not install a fan that cannot breathe.
Do you install multiple fans for a large attic?
Yes. Attics over 2,500 square feet, long ranch homes, and split attics with a firewall usually want two fans for proper coverage.
Can you install on a tile roof?
Yes. Tile installs use a tile-specific flashing kit. The job takes about an hour longer than asphalt and the installer must be tile-experienced.
The Product
Do solar attic fans really work?
Yes, when sized right and paired with enough soffit intake. A properly installed 30W solar fan makes a hot attic noticeably cooler.
Read the long answer →What size solar attic fan do I need?
A 30W fan covers most 1,500 to 2,500 square foot attics. Bigger attics need two fans. The product page sizes it for you based on your inputs.
Read the long answer →How loud is the fan?
Quiet. From inside the house you will not hear it. On the roof standing next to it, it sounds like a low desk fan.
Does the fan work at night?
No, and that is fine. At night the attic cools on its own. The fan is built to handle peak afternoon heat, not nighttime air.
How long does the fan itself last?
Quality solar attic fans run 15 to 20 years in the field. The brushless motor is the wear part and carries a lifetime warranty.
Solar attic fan vs powered attic fan vs whole house fan?
Three different jobs. Solar attic fan vents the attic on sunlight, with no operating cost added to your bill. Powered attic fan does the same job but draws electricity from your home. Whole house fan pulls air through the living space at night.
What maintenance does a solar attic fan need?
Almost nothing. A yearly visual check from the ground for debris or bird damage. Wipe the panel after a dust storm if you are in a dust-prone area.
Do I need an electrician for the install?
No. The fan runs only on its built-in solar panel. No new circuit, no new wiring, no electrician.
Climate Fit
Does a solar attic fan make sense for my climate?
Yes for most U.S. homes. The fan pays back fastest in hot-summer states like Texas, Florida, Arizona, California, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Nevada, but it works nationwide.
How much will it lower my attic temperature?
A properly sized 30W solar fan makes a hot attic dramatically cooler. The hotter your attic starts, the bigger the difference you feel.
What happens during a monsoon or a hurricane?
The unit is rated for high wind and heavy rain. The flashing sheds water the same way the rest of your roof does. In hurricane zones we add wind-rated screws.
Does a solar attic fan help in humid climates?
Yes, especially in humid climates. Moving humid attic air out is how you stop mildew on joists, sticky ductwork, and the muggy upstairs feeling.
Does it help with ice dams in cold weather?
Mild help, but ice dams are mainly a cold-climate problem and our service area is the hot-summer. We do not pitch the fan as an ice dam fix.
Do I need ember screens for wildfire areas?
In California WUI fire-hazard zones, yes. Our quarter-inch welded steel screen meets the ember-resistant vent standard for new construction.
Warranty And Support
What is the warranty on solar attic fans?
Lifetime warranty on the whole unit, plus a workmanship warranty from the installing roofer. We coordinate any claim.
Read the long answer →What if the fan stops working?
Call or email us. We open a ticket, diagnose the issue, ship a replacement under warranty if needed, and dispatch an installer for the swap.
What is not covered by the warranty?
Named storms, vandalism, hail over 1.5 inches, and damage from DIY tampering are excluded. Same exclusions your shingles carry.
Scheduling And Service Area
What exactly is bundled into the price?
The 30W fan, the matched flashing kit, all sealant and screws, roofer labor, the post-install photo set, lifetime warranty registration, and tax.
How do I know the install was done right?
The roofer sends a four-photo set: old roof area before, new fan on the roof, flashing seal close-up, and the fan spinning. We review every set.
How do I schedule my install?
Pick a date at checkout. Our coordinator confirms with your authorized installer within 24 hours and locks the appointment. Most installs happen within 2 to 3 weeks.
What states do you serve?
All 50 states. We install nationwide through our licensed authorized installer network.
